The Myth of Academic Inaccessibility
There is an unspoken belief in certain research circles that a paper must be painful to read in order to be taken seriously. The denser the jargon, the more passive the grammatical constructions, and the longer the subordinate clauses, the more “authoritative” the manuscript appears.
This is a dangerous pathology. When we hide simple insights behind labyrinthine vocabulary, we do not prove intellectual depth—we merely raise an artificial barrier to entry. Worse, we insulate our own ideas from critical scrutiny, because reviewers cannot falsify a claim that is too convoluted to decipher.

Precision Does Not Require Obfuscation
Many scientists defend obscure prose by claiming that precision demands it. “If I simplify, I lose nuance,” goes the argument.
Yet true precision lies in choosing the exact word, not the longest one. Consider the difference between these two passages:
Passage A (Obfuscated):
“It was observed that the utilization of transcriptomic quantification methodologies facilitated an enhancement in the identification frequency of differential expression candidates.”
Passage B (Clean & Precise):
“Quantifying transcripts with Salmon increased the number of detected differentially expressed genes from 412 to 684.”
Passage B contains strictly more information than Passage A: it names the algorithm, reports the exact count increase, and specifies the biological entity. Yet it uses fewer syllables and takes half the time to read.
Three Principles for Scientists at the Keyboard
- Beware the Nominalization: Verbs carry action. When you convert verbs into abstract nouns (“isolate” into “the execution of an isolation protocol”), you paralyze the sentence.
- Follow the Energy: Put the real actor in the subject position and the biological action in the verb. Instead of “A decrease in phosphorylation was mediated by compound 4”, write “Compound 4 blocked phosphorylation”.
- Respect the Reader’s Working Memory: Keep the subject and verb close together. Do not separate them with a 40-word dependent clause describing three assay conditions.
Clear writing is ultimately an act of generosity. It signals that you value your peers’ time, respect the public that funds your lab, and possess enough mastery over your subject to explain it in daylight.
